This development follows Gambhir's appointment as the head coach of Team India.
Under his guidance, KKR, led by Shreyas Iyer, clinched the Indian Premier League (IPL) title earlier this year.
As per The Telegraph, Sangakkara can now succeed the former Indian opener.
