    What's the story

England batter Joe Root continues his rich vein of form in international cricket.

The former England captain raced to his 17th ODI century in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy encounter against Afghanistan in Lahore.

He shared a substantial stand with Jos Buttler after England were down to 133/4.

Root perished for 120 runs in a chase of 326 as England folded for 317.

    Knock

    A typical Root knock

Root played yet another traditional ODI knock after England lost two quick wickets in the first powerplay. He joined forces with Ben Duckett, having firmly held his fort.

The latter's meticulous technique against spinners grabbed eyeballs. He helped England recover alongside Buttler thereafter.

Root, who constantly evaded dot balls, raced to his century off 98 balls in the 42nd over.

    Century

Root ends his bid for ODI ton

Root, who has been making waves in Test cricket, is finally back to his best in the 50-over format.

He has slammed his first ODI century since June 2019. His last century came in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup when he scored a match-winning 100*(94) against the West Indies.

Overall, Root hammered his 17th century in ODI cricket.

    Information

    Multiple tons in Champions Trophy

Root has become only the second England player with multiple centuries in the Champions Trophy. He joins Marcus Trescothick on this elite list. Root's only other Champions Trophy ton came in the 2017 edition (133* vs Bangladesh).

    Runs

17th ton and 50 sixes in ODIs for Root

Root's 120 came from 111 balls. He slammed 11 fours and a six.

Root has raced to 6,822 runs in ODIs at 48.04. In addition to 17 tons, he owns 41 fifties.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Root now owns 50 sixes in ODIs.

Across 4 matches versus the Afghans (3 innings), he has raced to 219 runs at 73 (100s: 1, 50s: 1).
