    What's the story

South Africa's T20 league (SA20) commissioner Graeme Smith has hailed the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the undisputed king of franchise cricket.

In an exclusive interview with PTI Bhasha, Smith said they can "only learn" from IPL to improve their own league.

He vowed to make SA20 the world's second-best league after IPL. Here are further details.

    Strategic partnership

Smith acknowledges BCCI and IPL's support for SA20

Smith also acknowledged the immense support and guidance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL in shaping SA20.

"BCCI and IPL have been amazing in supporting us and guiding us in every decision we have made," he said.

The third season of SA20 is currently underway, with its final stages being played out on South African soil.

    Player involvement

Karthik's participation and future prospects for Indian players

Dinesh Karthik, a veteran IPL player, made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to play in SA20.

He played for Paarl Royals but his side was knocked out in the second qualifier by two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

When asked if more Indian players will join SA20, Smith was enthusiastic but clarified that no such plans are in the pipeline.

    League evolution

Smith reflects on SA20's journey and future plans

Smith got emotional reminiscing SA20's journey, from its birth to the final match of the third season.

He thanked six IPL franchises for their contribution in expanding the league.

Smith also revealed that no major changes are in the pipeline for SA20's format in the next three seasons.

"I don't think changes are necessary at the moment," he said.

    Talent development

SA20's impact on South Africa's cricket ecosystem

Smith also emphasized the positive effect of SA20 on South Africa's cricket ecosystem, with young talents like Lhuandre Pretorious, Kwena Mphaka, and Ryan Rickelton coming to the fore.

He stressed the league has given a platform to these youngsters to compete against the best in the world.

"With this league we have managed to create a great platform for youngsters who are rubbing shoulders with the best players in the world," he said.
