Spencer Johnson eager to fill Starc's shoes in Champions Trophy

    What's the story

Rising Australian cricket star Spencer Johnson will be replacing Mitchell Starc's place in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Meanwhile, Starc recently withdrew from the tournament citing personal reasons.

Johnson has already made his mark with a promising performance against Sri Lanka, taking two wickets for 44 runs from seven overs in their first ODI match.

    Here's more.

    Eagerness

Young pacer talks about comparisons with Starc

While talking to ESPNcricinfo about what Johnson thinks about him filling Starc's shoes in the tournament, he stated, "It's obviously something I've pictured in my mind, to come in and play a similar role to him."

He further added, "There were a few nerves there, and obviously big shoes to fill. Hopefully a few more and I'll be able to replicate some of the stuff he's done."

    Bowling prowess

Johnson's unique bowling style and future prospects

Johnson's awkward bounce and back-of-a-length bowling drew Starc comparisons.

He utilized his height advantage well to claim his maiden ODI wicket in his third match.

His second wicket was also special as he consistently bowled around the 140 kph range with the new ball on a dry surface.

As mentioned, the young pacer finished with figures worth 2/44 in seven overs.

    Career progression

    Johnson's journey and future aspirations

Despite limited exposure in longer formats, Johnson has already played 11 white-ball internationals (three ODIs and eight T20Is) since his debut in August 2023.

His best performance to date came against Pakistan, where he claimed five wickets for just 26 runs in a T20I.

Meanwhile, the record-breaking feat marked the best figures by an Australian quick in the format.

However, most of his career has been spent playing T20 cricket across various leagues.

    Injury setback

Johnson's injury and recovery ahead of Champions Trophy

Johnson had suffered an injury setback in November when he tore a tendon in his right foot while playing a Sheffield Shield game.

However, he remains a key member of Australia's ICC Champions Trophy squad.

He now has an extended opportunity in the 50-over format to improve his record of 12 wickets at an average of 42.25 from 11 List A matches.

    Match recap

Sri Lanka beat Australia in low-scoring 1st ODI

Sri Lanka's cricket team pulled off a stunning 49-run victory over Australia in the first ODI match in Colombo.

The win was primarily due to the phenomenal performance of captain Charith Asalanka, who scored a brilliant century.

Although Sri Lanka's batting lineup struggled at first, Asalanka's leadership and skill turned the tables for the island nation. Sri Lanka scored 214 runs in 46 overs.

In response, Australia folded for 165 in just 33.5 overs, thanks to Maheesh Theekshana's four-fer (4/40).
