Stokes can be Buttler's successor as England's white-ball captain: Details

    What's the story

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is searching for a new white-ball captain following Jos Buttler's resignation on February 28, 2025.

With the 2025-26 season around the corner, speculation is rife as to who will lead England's ODI and T20I teams.

One of the frontrunners for the role is Ben Stokes, England's Test captain.

Meanwhile, ECB's managing director Rob Key recently revealed that Stokes has shown interest in the leadership role.

    Here's more.

    Leading contender

Stokes's credentials make him a prime candidate

Stokes, a two-time World Cup winner, was instrumental in England's triumphs at the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.

His immense contribution to these victories makes him a prime candidate for the white-ball captaincy.

ECB's managing director Key confirmed they are seriously considering Stokes for the role, thanks to his phenomenal track record.

    Discussion

Key discusses Stokes's potential captaincy role

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Key revealed that he recently broached the subject with Stokes about the possible captaincy.

While nothing has been formally offered yet, Stokes didn't rule out the possibility.

"I sort of said to him the other day... and said to Stokes, 'Oh, by the way, I have just said you are in consideration for the white-ball gig,'" Key stated.

    Comeback

    Stokes's return to white-ball cricket

Despite his commitment to Test cricket, Stokes is currently training in Abu Dhabi, hinting at a possible return to white-ball cricket.

However, the demands of this format and its busy international schedule could affect his availability.

The ECB will also have to consider Stokes's long-term suitability for the role, given his past injury struggles and his decision to step away from ODIs in 2022 before making a short-lived return for the 2023 World Cup.

    Alternative candidates

Other contenders for England's white-ball captaincy

While Stokes is a strong contender for the white-ball captaincy, there are other potential candidates as well.

Harry Brook, who captained England's white-ball side in the home series against Australia in September 2024 and served as Buttler's deputy during the Champions Trophy 2025, is also a viable option.

Key acknowledged that careful consideration will be needed before making a final decision on this matter.

    Numbers

A look at Stokes' ODI numbers

Across 114 ODIs, the all-rounder has amassed 3,463 runs at an average of 41.22.

He also boasts a strike rate of 95.68 across 99 innings alongside five hundreds and 24 half-centuries. His highest ODI score is 182.

With the ball he has bagged 74 scalps at an average of 42.39 and an economy of 6.05.

According to ESPNcricinfo, he has captained England in just three ODIs.
