IPL 2018: DRS will be used in this edition

    What's the story

IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla has confirmed that the Decision Review System (DRS) will be used in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

The BCCI, which for years was against the use of this technology, has now accepted it.

When DRS makes its debut in the IPL, it will become the second global T20 league, after Pakistan Super League, to incorporate the technology.

    Change of mind

BCCI's stance on DRS has changed

The BCCI, which was a staunch opponent of DRS, implemented it for the first time in 2016 in the home series against England.

The reluctance of the BCCI stemmed from the fact that it wasn't entirely convinced that the technology is 100 percent foolproof.

Specifically, they were never happy with the ball-tracking technology.

DRS was first used in a Test match in 2008.

    Thinking ahead

BCCI has now briefed umpires on how to use DRS

The decision to use the DRS was taken in the last board meeting.

For effective implementation of DRS, top 10 umpires were briefed on how to use the system.

The session was conducted by Denis Burns, the ICC umpires' coach and former pacer-turned umpire Paul Reiffel.

This comes as a big relief for players especially given the poor standards of umpiring in last season.
