    What's the story

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian wicket-keeper, Ajay Ratra, as the men's selection committee's fifth member.

Ratra was the frontrunner in the race that had Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Shakti Singh, and Ajay Mehra.

He will be filling the position left vacant by Salil Ankola, a former Indian fast bowler.

Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar leads the selection panel.

    Selection journey

First assignment and selection process details

The selection process for the new committee member began in January this year, following Ankola's departure.

The Indian cricket board had invited applications for the post at that time. Ratra now fills the vacant position after nearly nine months.

His first assignment as a selector will be the upcoming Duleep Trophy, marking his official entry into this role.

    Future contributions

    Ratra's role in selection committee

Ratra will be working with the existing selection committee members to identify and support emerging cricketers.

The BCCI stated, "As a selector, Mr. Ratra will work alongside the existing members of the selection committee to identify and support the next generation of cricketers who will represent India on the global stage."

His insights are expected to play a crucial role identifying and nurturing the talented youngsters, as well as giving them opportunities to excel.

    Career highlights

    Cricketing achievements and coaching experience

Ratra, who represented India in six Tests and 12 ODIs in the early 2000s, has a significant coaching background.

He has already served as the head coach for Punjab, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh.

The 42-year-old was part of VVS Laxman's coaching staff for the ODI series in South Africa.

In addition to this, Ratra also served head coach Ricky Ponting at Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach.
