Abhishek reacts to competition with Gill, Jaiswal for opening slot

    What's the story

The rising star of Indian cricket Abhishek Sharma made a significant mark in the fifth T20I against England at Wankhede Stadium.

Despite stiff competition from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening spot, Sharma has emerged as a strong contender.

His brilliant performance comes after an initial struggle in South Africa, where he managed to turn his fortunes around against England.

    Stellar performance

    Sharma's record-breaking performance in final T20I

Sharma began the series on a high, scoring an impressive 79 in his first match.

But it was his performance in the final T20I that really set him apart.

He scored a staggering 135 runs, marking the second-fastest century for India in T20Is, off 37 balls.

This feat has further cemented his place as a top contender for the opening slot in future matches.

    Team spirit

Sharma dismisses rivalry with Gill and Jaiswal

In a chat with ESPNcricinfo, Sharma brushed aside any idea of rivalry between him, Gill, and Jaiswal.

"I had met Jassu [Jaiswal] and Shubman yesterday [at the BCCI awards]. There has never been a competition among us - we are playing together since Under-16," he said.

"There was just one dream - to play for India. The three of us are playing now, so there is no better feeling."

    Captain's advice

Sharma credits Yadav for his record-breaking ton

Sharma credited his record-breaking performance to the advice he received from team captain Suryakumar Yadav.

He revealed that it was Yadav's guidance that helped him break free and express himself on the field.

"I just asked Surya [Suryakumar] paaji' What do you think?'. He said, 'Since a wicket has fallen, you can take your time, take a couple of balls.' That really helped me."

    Aggressive strategy

Sharma's aggressive approach leads to record-breaking performance

Sharma's aggressive approach was on full display as he reached his half-century in just 17 balls and completed his century in 37 deliveries.

This strategy paid off as he scored 135, the highest individual score by an Indian in T20I format.

His performance reiterates the importance of an aggressive yet calculated approach in high-stakes matches.

    Mentor's influence

Sharma acknowledges Yuvraj Singh's role in his success

Sharma also credited his mentor and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, for his meteoric rise to stardom.

He thanked the constant support from seniors like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

This goes on to show how important it is to have a mentor and guide in a young cricketer's career.
