Threads launches fact-checking program ahead of US elections

    What's the story

Meta's latest social network, Threads, has launched its own fact-checking program.

The announcement was made by Instagram head Adam Mosseri. He stated that the company had recently introduced the capability for fact-checkers to assess and label false content on Threads.

However, Mosseri did not provide specific details regarding the program's launch or its regional restrictions.

    Partnerships unclear

    Fact-checking partnerships and election preparedness

The exact organizations partnering with Meta for fact-checking on Threads remain undisclosed.

The decision to implement this program seems primarily aimed at preparing for the forthcoming US elections, according to Mosseri's announcement.

Despite ongoing general elections in India, it is considered unlikely for a social network to introduce a fact-checking program during an election cycle.

    Future goals

Meta's future plans for Threads fact-checking

In December, Meta expressed its intention to extend the fact-checking program to Threads.

Mosseri had stated in a post at that time, "We currently match fact-check ratings from Facebook or Instagram to Threads, but our goal is for fact-checking partners to have the ability to review and rate misinformation on the app."

This indicates a future plan of enabling independent review and rating of misinformation on Threads by fact-checking partners.
