    What's the story

A recent study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, suggests that semaglutide, a drug typically used for weight loss and diabetes management, may also be beneficial for individuals struggling with alcohol use disorder (AUD).

This research, led by Kyle Simmons from Oklahoma State University and Jesse Richards from the University of Oklahoma, is the first to explore the potential benefits of semaglutide in treating AUD.

    Symptom reduction

Study reports "significant reduction" in AUD symptoms

The research conducted by Simmons and Richards involved six participants who were already using semaglutide for weight management.

The study reported a "significant reduction" in AUD symptoms among these individuals, although it did not specify which symptoms were alleviated.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), AUD symptoms can range from increased tolerance to alcohol and illness from drinking, to risky behavior due to alcohol consumption and obsessive thoughts about alcohol.

    Craving control

    Semaglutide could help control cravings

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists, which are believed to simulate feelings of fullness and potentially curb appetite.

This effect on craving control could be particularly beneficial for those with AUD, as many symptoms are related to this issue.

Patients using semaglutide for weight loss or diabetes have reported decreased cravings for various addictions including shopping and alcohol.

    Patient experiences

It reduced a patient's craving for beer

Richards, an expert in obesity medicine at the University of Oklahoma, shared several anecdotes with Tulsa World newspaper about individuals experiencing less desire to drink while on semaglutide.

One patient who used to consume an entire case of beer within hours, reported that his craving for beer almost disappeared after starting semaglutide treatment.

These anecdotal experiences, while not definitive proof, provide intriguing insights into the potential benefits of semaglutide for those with AUD.
