Musk's Grok AI under Modi government's radar for offensive language

    What's the story

The Indian government is now examining Elon Musk's X-owned AI chatbot, Grok, according to India Today.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has flagged cases where Grok, which is integrated into X, has responded with Hindi slangs and abusive language.

The ministry is now looking into why this is happening.

Developed by Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI in 2023, Grok was envisioned as an alternative to popular AI models like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

    Provocative interactions

    Unfiltered responses spark controversy

Grok has become popular among Indian social media users for its use of unfiltered language and slang when provoked.

The controversy surrounding Grok started when an X user shared their interaction with the chatbot, where it responded to provocation using Hindi expletives.

The user asked about their "10 best mutuals," and after not getting an immediate response, used harsh language.

Grok replied with the same slang and told the user to "chill kar," which translates to calm down in English.

    Unique feature

Grok's open-ended approach sets it apart

Grok's open-ended approach, allowing uncensored AI interactions, sets it apart from other AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

Most AI chatbots are programmed to steer clear of discussions on controversial topics.

This unique feature has sparked debates about the quality of datasets used to train these AI language models and the need for some kind of regulation or oversight.
