According to Apple, apps downloaded through the web using the API can be backed up, restored, and updated as standard apps can.

For an iPhone user in the EU to install an app from a website, they must explicitly allow that developer to install apps via their Settings.
A system sheet will then provide details such as the app name, developer name, app description, screenshots and more.
Developers are required to distribute apps only from their developer account and must publish clear data collection policies for user understanding.
Fee details
Core technology fee for app developers
While there is no requirement for developers to share a percentage of app sales with Apple for apps distributed via websites, a Core Technology Fee of €0.50 is applicable for each annual install exceeding one million in the past 12 months.
However, this fee is waived for non-profit organizations, accredited educational institutions, and government entities.
This ensures that these organizations can distribute their apps without incurring additional costs, as per Apple.
