Google's Pixel Tablet faces criticism for lack of specialization

    What's the story

Google's multifunctional device, the Pixel Tablet, has been criticized for its lack of specialization in any particular area.

Critics have pointed out absence of first-party productivity accessories such as a stylus or keyboard.

Additionally, the tablet lacks key Nest Hub features like Continued Conversation.

These shortcomings have led to debates about whether its performance as a smart home display and tablet justifies its price.

    Concerns

    Feature additions reflect Google's challenges

A year after its launch, the Pixel Tablet has only seen a few new features, none of which suggest a clear strategy from Google.

A recent feature addition exemplifies this issue. When users set Google Keep as their default notes app on the tablet, a note-taking shortcut appears.

However, since at least February, tapping this button leads to a banner page stating "Coming soon."

    Feature delay

Note taking shortcut yet to be made live

Two months ago, Android expert Mishaal Rahman revealed the intended function of the note-taking shortcut on Pixel Tablet.

Using hidden settings, it's possible to activate a lock screen notes feature that allows users to draw or take notes with their finger or a third-party stylus while the tablet is locked.

Despite the feature being complete behind the scenes, Google hasn't made it live yet.

    Strategy criticism

    Google's ambiguous strategy raises questions

Google's decision to neither launch the note-taking feature nor hide the non-functional button has been criticized.

Instead, they opted for an ambiguous splash screen that vaguely promises something coming soon.

This move is seen as symptomatic of larger issues within Google's strategy, which is notorious for discontinuing many features and products and making abrupt changes to its product lineup.

    Future prospects

    Hardware investment continues despite challenges

Despite facing criticism, Google remains committed to investing in hardware.

The company has switched to mostly custom chips for its mobile devices.

Several signature Pixel features, including excellent photography algorithms and quality of life features like Now Playing and proactive information on your lock screen and home screen via the At a Glance widget, seem here to stay.
