    What's the story

The night sky will stage a spectacular celestial event on March 13-14, 2025, marking the first total lunar eclipse since November 2022.

The rare phenomenon, often referred to as a "Blood Moon," will be most visible from North America.

The term "Blood Moon" is used due to the Moon's deep reddish hue during the eclipse, which lasts for approximately five hours.

    Viewing details

'Blood Moon' visible from North and South America

The next total lunar eclipse will be visible in its entirety from both North and South America.

The Moon will pass through Earth's shadow, taking on a deep reddish hue for 65 minutes. This color change is caused by Earth's atmosphere filtering out blue light and letting red and orange tones through.

All time zones across North America, including Alaska and Hawaii, are expected to get a clear view of the event.

    Eclipse timings

Global visibility and best viewing times

The total lunar eclipse can be seen by anyone on Earth's night side.

In Western Europe, viewers will witness the Moon setting while still eclipsed. Meanwhile, in Australia and New Zealand, the Moon will rise already in totality.

For those in eastern North America, the eclipse starts at 1:09am EDT on March 14 with totality from 2:26am to 3:32am EDT.

    Cultural impact

    Lunar eclipse and cultural significance

Lunar eclipses have always fascinated us, inspiring several myths and legends. For example, Incan mythology believes the Moon's blood-red color during an eclipse is due to a jaguar attacking it.

The upcoming total lunar eclipse will coincide with this year's full Worm Moon, the third and final full Moon of winter.

The event will be best visible from Los Angeles, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Lisbon, and Cairo.

    Observation tips

Observing the 'Blood Moon': Tips for best experience

Observing a lunar eclipse doesn't require special equipment and is safe to view with the naked eye.

However, astronomers recommend using telescopes or binoculars as they can greatly enhance the experience of viewing the celestial event.

To fully appreciate it, it is recommended to find a dark location away from bright city lights for optimal viewing conditions during the lunar eclipse.
