    What's the story

Samsung makes one of the best displays. Period. But have you ever wondered if Samsung made displays for theaters?

Wonder no more because the Korean tech giant has introduced Onyx, a 34-foot LED screen that is 10 times brighter than standard cinema projectors, offers perfect blacks and a color coverage that will redefine your cinematic experience.

    Here's more about Samsung Onyx.

    Features

Samsung Onyx LED Screen: At a glance

It comes with an unprecedented 146 foot-lamberts (unit for luminance), offers 4K resolution and supports 2D, 3D, and High Dynamic Range.

Moreover, just like OLED screen, the Onyx uses LEDs as individual pixels. This means every pixel in Onyx can be turned on and off on command.

This allows for perfect black levels, as each pixel can be individually lit or extinguished.

    Set up

Samsung's 34-foot Onyx is a patchwork of smaller panels

Technically speaking, it would be impractical to have a huge single cinema screen - both setup-wise and maintenance-wise.

Hence, Samsung uses a combination of interchangeable smaller screens, like a patchwork, to form this 34-foot massive screen.

This allows for easy and cost-effective maintenance, considering dead panels can be easily swapped and also have more longevity than traditional projector bulbs.

    Information

And, what about the audio experience?

To match the sound experience with cinematic brilliance, Samsung has Onyx sound which uses speakers mounted above the screen. These speakers, combined with digital-audio processing, offers impressive audio experience. Moreover, surround speakers allow for 3D audio technology like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

    Wait for it

Onyx is NOT coming soon to a theater near you

While these screens offer another level of cinematic experience, they aren't coming anytime soon at a theater near you.

Samsung will first have to scale up production and make the technology more cost-efficient and more accessible.

Only once these screens become affordable for mass-entertainment, will we be able to experience it.
