Gmail's new Smart Compose feature: Details, activation and more

    What's the story

At the recently concluded annual developer conference Google I/O 2018, the company announced a "Smart Compose" feature for Gmail which will help you write e-mails using machine learning (ML).

It comes as part of Google's focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its services. Smart Compose will be rolled out in some weeks but users can also start using it right away.

    Here's how.

    Auto-complete

What is Smart Compose and how does it work?

Powered by AI, Smart Compose understands the context of your e-mail and suggests what you might want to write next as you type.

If a suggestion suits your requirement, you can click on the "tab" button to incorporate it into your text.

It's like a smart auto-complete, predictive-type feature. It can deliver complete sentences and help you compose e-mails faster and without grammatical errors.

    Coming soon

How to activate Smart Compose before its official roll-out?

This feature works on the recently revamped Gmail design which can be enabled by going to Settings > Try the new Gmail.

Next, go to Settings > Settings > General and enable "Google.com/mail/answer/9007264">Experimental Access."

"Experimental features are pre-releases that you can turn on to test and share feedback about," Google said.

    Hit "Save Changes."

To switch back, you can uncheck the "Experimental Access" box.

    Information

Smart Compose is similar to the Smart Reply feature

Smart Compose is essentially an extension of Gmail's Smart Reply feature where algorithmically-generated replies crop up as suggestions to e-mails. "Smart Compose is available in English. It is not designed to provide answers and may not always predict factually correct information," Google forewarned.

    Information

Recently, Gmail rolled out its biggest redesign ever which brought a huge set of changes to the popular e-mail service. The new updates include e-mail snoozing, e-mail nudging, hover bar, confidential mode, new Google Tasks sidebar, and offline mode.
