Use in-app billing system or face ban, Apple warns Patreon

    What's the story

Creators on the crowdfunding platform Patreon face a potential disruption as Apple throws its weight around in the app store ecosystem.

The tech giant is demanding that Patreon switch from its own billing system to Apple's in-app purchase (IAP) system for all iOS transactions by November 2025.

This move, if not complied with, could result in Patreon being removed from the App Store entirely.

    Creator impact

Patreon's response and impact on creators

In response to Apple's directive, Patreon has informed its creators about the impending changes.

The platform stated that they will transition to subscription billing by November 2024.

Creators are given two options: either increase their membership fees to offset Apple's commission or bear the cost themselves.

However, if they choose to postpone this shift until November 2025, they won't be able to offer memberships via the iOS app until they adopt Apple's in-app purchase system.

    Discontent expressed

Patreon expresses dissatisfaction with Apple's mandate

Patreon has expressed dissatisfaction with the options presented by Apple, stating that neither raising subscription prices nor absorbing the cost themselves is "ideal."

The company clarified in a blog post: "Most creators on Patreon use subscription billing. Unfortunately, because of Apple's timelines and constraints, we're now forced to migrate all creators on Apple's timeline."

This discontentment stems from the fact that Patreon had previously managed to evade Apple's in-app billing requirements.

    Fee implementation

Apple's 30% fee on new memberships from November 2024

Starting November 2024, Apple will impose a 30% fee on all new memberships purchased through the Patreon iOS app.

This charge will not affect existing members who are already subscribed to a creator; it will only impact new memberships acquired via the iOS app.

Prices on the web and Android app will remain unchanged.
