Apple to unveil M4 Macs next month: What to expect

    What's the story

Apple is preparing for its upcoming October event, where it is expected to unveil the latest M4 Macs.

This marks the company's fourth October event in five years. Last year, Apple introduced new MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by the M3 series of chips at a similar event.

While the announcement is anticipated next month, the actual release of these new Macs could be delayed until November. Here's what to expect from the upgraded models.

    Chipset upgrade

M4 Pro, M4 Max chips to power new MacBook Pro

The upcoming MacBook Pro models are expected to be powered by the yet-to-be-announced M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, alongside the M4 chip which debuted in the iPad Pro back in May.

These high-performance chips are predicted to utilize TSMC's advanced 3nm process technology, which is also used in the A18 and base M4 chips.

While specific details about these new chipsets remain undisclosed, each new chip generation typically brings enhanced speed and performance.

    RAM boost

    Apple may double RAM

Apple is reportedly planning to double the standard RAM in its new M4 Macs to 16GB.

This upgrade will apply to the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, the new Mac mini, and the updated iMac.

The shift from 8GB of RAM, a standard that has been maintained for eight years, comes as Apple's applications become more memory-intensive due to AI and evolving user needs.

    Design overhaul

Mac mini set for significant redesign

The Mac mini is reportedly set for a significant redesign, marking the most substantial update in its 14-year history.

The new model is expected to be smaller and may replace support for USB-A ports with additional USB-C ports.

Despite the lack of specific design details, anticipation surrounding this redesign is high, particularly given that the Mac mini remains the most affordable Mac option available from Apple.

    Accessory update

iMac and magic accessories may get a refresh

In light of rumors about a new iMac with M4 chips, there is speculation that Apple will refresh its Magic accessories.

To comply with the European Union's requirement for USB-C compatibility, Apple is expected to phase out the Lightning connector in its desktop accessories.

The transition to USB-C for the Magic Mouse, Keyboard, and Trackpad will align with this regulatory shift and modernize Apple's accessory lineup.

    Color addition

MacBook Pro may get Space Black color option

Currently, the Space Black color option is only available for higher-end M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro models.

However, as Apple gears up to unveil its M4 MacBook Pro, there are expectations that the entry-level model will also be available in Space Black.

This change would align it more closely with its higher-end counterparts in terms of aesthetics.
