Apple iPhones likely to get new names this year

    What's the story

In a few weeks, Apple will unveil the next generation of iPhones with some breathtaking features and, probably, a redesigned camera module.

The phones are expected to offer a major upgrade, and reports indicate the company is changing a lot more than hardware/software capabilities this time around.

Case in point: The names of the upcoming devices.

    Here's all about it.

    Name change

Apple reportedly planning new names for iPhone 11 line-up

Going by Apple's current naming strategy, last year's iPhone Xs and Xs Max should be succeeded by iPhone 11 and 11 Max, while iPhone Xr's 2019 upgrade should be called iPhone 11r.

It's something we all expect but a recent report from French outlet iPhoneSoft suggests the company is looking to assign new monikers and change the current naming scheme completely.

    New names

    What are the new names

According to the report, the successor to iPhone Xr is likely to be called iPhone 11, while the newer version of higher-end iPhone Xs and Xs Max models would be named iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, respectively.

The names were revealed in a series of leaked documents from case-maker ESR and were also hinted by a tipster recently, 9To5Mac reported.

    Risk

Is this the right way to go?

When you release just three phones in a year, messing up with the naming strategy can easily backfire.

However, in this case, the new names make differentiating between higher and lower-end iPhones a tad easier.

Yes, the names are clunky, especially iPhone 11 Pro Max, but we believe there will be less confusion when they hit the market.

    Specs

What you will get with iPhone 11 series

Notably, iPhone 11-series will run on A13 Bionic chipset and feature the same metal-glass sandwiched design we've seen on the 2018 line-up.

The notched panels of the higher-end models will be OLED, while the successor to Xr will sport an LCD display.

The rear side of the phones will have a square-ish module that'll house dual or triple camera lenses (depending on the model).
