    What's the story

The 7th edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC), the nation's largest telecom industry event, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 27 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, as announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Co-hosted by the DoT and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), this three-day event is anticipated to draw over 1,00,000 attendees from 31 countries, featuring more than 1,300 delegates, over 400 speakers, 225-plus exhibitors, and 400 start-ups.

    Details

What topics will IMC 2023 focus on?

IMC 2023 will focus on a range of technologies, including 5G, 6G, broadcasting, semiconductors, drone devices, and green technologies.

The previous IMC witnessed India joining the ranks of countries with fifth-generation networks as both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel launched their respective 5G mobile networks.

Communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated at the IMC 2023 curtain raiser in July that it's time to scale up telecom manufacturing under the PLI scheme and position India as a technology powerhouse.

    What Next?

Aspire start-up program introduced at IMC 2023

This year's IMC will debut 'Aspire,' a start-up program designed to spark entrepreneurial growth among young innovators and industry delegates in the telecom and other digital sectors.

Aspire will offer a platform for start-ups to display their innovations and connect with potential investors and partners.

It will play a vital role in promoting innovation and collaboration within the Indian telecom and digital industries.

    Insights

Becoming an exporter of telecom and technology

During the IMC 2023 curtain raiser event, Vaishnaw also stressed the importance of transforming India into an exporter of telecom and technology.

He pointed out that India has already achieved more than Rs. 18,000 crore in telecom manufacturing under the PLI scheme.

However, he called on the government and industry stakeholders to increase efforts by 5x to 10x to establish India as a global technology powerhouse and contribute significantly to the nation's economic growth.
