TMC assigns new role to Mahua Moitra
What's the story
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has appointed Mahua Moitra as district chief of Krishnanagar (Nadia North), which falls under her constituency in West Bengal.
The appointment is a blatant show of support for Moitra, who is being investigated for corruption in the cash-for-query scam.
Last week, the Lok Sabha Ethics Panel recommended Moitra's expulsion from Parliament in a 6:4 verdict.
Context
Why does this story matter?
Moitra is currently being probed by the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee in the cash-for-query scam case.
The 49-year-old has been accused of asking questions against the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament in return for cash from industrialist Darshan Hiranandani.
The anti-corruption body, Lokpal, has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the case.

Moitra thanks CM Mamata Banerjee
Taking to X, Moitra thanked the Chief Minister and TMC party supremo Mamata Banerjee for her appointment.
"Will always work with the party for the people of Krishnanagar," she wrote.
Notably, Moitra is among 15 other new district chiefs announced by the party in West Bengal on Monday.

Moitra predicts an increased winning margin in 2024
Last week, Moitra speculated that all the controversy around her and the corruption charges would aid her in doubling her winning margin in the 2024 elections.
However, she deleted the post later.
"Never Waste a Good Crisis they say...this just helped me double my 2024 winning margin," Moitra had written in her post.
