'Right-to-pray' crusader, Swamy, feels Hindu unity will ensure temple's construction

    What's the story

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has said if Hindus unite then no one can stop the construction of a magnificent Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Swamy made these comments while he was addressing a conference at the BHU's Swatantrata Bhavan. The function was organized in the memory of former Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal.

He said the Supreme Court will understand Hindus' right to pray.

    Swamy's plea

Swamy's plea about his right to pray was accepted

It should be noted that Swamy moved Supreme Court, earlier this year, saying praying at the birthplace of Lord Rama was his fundamental right.

Swamy claimed his right to worship was more important than the property rights of those fighting for 2.77 acres of disputed land in Ayodhya.

The bench including the then CJI Dipak Misra and Justice DY Chandrachud had considered his plea.

    Looking back

Swamy said, "Sunni Waqf Board can try whatever they want"

In September, Swamy said he moved the SC for early listing of the Ram Janmabhoomi issue. Back then he had said, "It is my fundamental right to pray. The Sunni Waqf Board can try whatever it wants."

The same month the SC upheld the judgment of a lower court which said praying in the mosque wasn't essential in Islam.

    Previous judgment

Earlier, SC bench listed the matter for January 2019

On a related note, an SC bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi listed the Ayodhya matter for January 2019.

While all eyes were on the apex court, the bench adjourned the years-old case and said dates for the hearing will be decided next year.

Earlier this month, the SC also rejected a plea by VHP requesting an early listing of the matter.

    Swamy for temple

On Swamy's request, the dispute was fast-tracked in court

Swamy, who has been vocal about the issue, said Muslims can offer prayer at any other place but Hindu sentiments were associated with the birthplace of the deity.

He also added efforts would be made to declare "Ram Setu" as a national heritage.

It was Swamy on whose insistence the Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir dispute was fast-tracked in the court.
