    What's the story

A recent analysis by PRS Legislative Research has revealed a huge gap in earnings of Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across Indian states.

According to the report, MLAs in Maharashtra and Telangana earn salaries as high as ₹2.5 lakh per month.

Meanwhile, their counterparts in Kerala earn just ₹70,000 a month.

    Salary breakdown

Basic salary disparities among Indian MLAs

The report has also dissected the basic salary/fixed allowance, commonly known as Cost to Company (CTC) in corporate lingo.

An MLA from Maharashtra gets ₹1.82L as basic, while their Kerala counterpart receives a paltry ₹2,000.

Kerala MLAs are paid ₹25,000 as constituency allowance, ₹20,000 as minimum monthly travel allowance, ₹11,000 as telephone allowance, ₹4,000 as information allowance and ₹8,000 as sumptuary monthly allowance.

They also receive ₹2,000 for daily assembly attendance.

Gujarat MLAs earn ₹1,10,800 a month, which includes a basic salary of ₹78,800, a personal assistance allowance of ₹20,000, telephone charges of ₹7,000, and postal and stationary expenditures of ₹5,000 per month.

    Additional allowances

Allowances and salary structures for Indian MLAs

MLAs are paid salaries and allowances according to laws enacted by their respective state legislatures.

Some states, including Maharashtra, have even linked MLAs' salaries and dearness allowance to that of the principal secretary to the state government.

Apart from their salaries, MLAs are entitled to various allowances, including daily allowances for attending assembly sessions, conveyance allowance for vehicles, telephone charges, electricity bills, etc.
