    What's the story

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently recounted his experience of getting jailed while protesting against former PM Indira Gandhi during the Congress-led rule in Assam.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon.

"I have also been beaten up by the Congress government in Assam... I too had jail food for seven days," he said.

Shah criticizes Congress for unrest in Assam

Shah took the opportunity to attack the Congress party, saying it was responsible for creating unrest in Assam.

"Congress did not allow peace in Assam." He reiterated the party's criticism of Congress's rule during its time in power.

He also noted that over 10,000 youths have surrendered their arms and returned to the mainstream in the last decade, which helped restore peace in the state.

Lachit Barphukan Police Academy: A vision for the future

Shah said during his visit that he hopes Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will emerge as India's best police training institute in the next five years.

He congratulated Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for naming it after the brave warrior Lachit Barphukan, who led Assam to victory over the Mughals.

He added that Barphukan's biography is now being taught in 23 languages and inspiring students across India.

    Development initiatives

Assam's conviction rate and upcoming infrastructure projects

Shah noted that Assam's conviction rate had increased from 5% to 25% in three years, and is expected to soon exceed the national average.

He further announced PM Narendra Modi's government's ₹3 lakh crore worth of infrastructure projects in Assam.

This comes after a recent business summit where a proposed ₹5 lakh crore investment was discussed, hinting at major economic development plans in the state.
