Restoring faith: Congress-MLA from Assam carries, cremates body of poor-man

At a time when elected representatives have made it difficult for us to have faith in them, a Congress MLA from Assam cremated the body of a poor man.
40-year-old Rupjyoti Kurmi, who is a three-time MLA from Mariani, in Assam's Jorhat district, volunteered to be a pallbearer after a local, Dilip Dey, passed away.
Dey's family consisted of only one physically challenged cousin.

Congress MLA says this is least he could have done
Kurmi was informed about Dey's death by a local trader Rupom Gogoi. The trader revealed Kurmi prepared the 'chita' in no time and carried the body for cremation.
"He was too poor and lonely to have a decent funeral. As a human being and responsible for people I represent, it was the least I could do for him," Kurmi was quoted by a daily.

Soon after cremating Dey, Kurmi took part in another funeral. He became a pallbearer for the mother of an auto-rickshaw driver Kabir Ahmed. Ahmed's mother wanted the MLA to be a part of her last journey.

This is not the first-time Kurmi has showed how MLAs should behave.
Last year, he carried sacks of food on his back to relief camp near Kaziranga National Park, after Assam floods.
"I may be an MLA but I am also a human being. I enjoy being among people and working for them," he had said back then.
