    Maharashtra- Junk food in school canteens banned

    What's the story

    Sale of junk food in school canteens of Maharashtra has now been prohibited by the government.

    This decision follows recommendations made by the Centre over two years ago; schools have been directed not to sell foods 'High in Fat, Salt and Sugar' (HFSS).

    Furthermore, this decision follows fears surrounding childhood obesity and related diseases.

    Justin Bieber to be secured by 1,500 personnel tomorrow

    Justin Bieber, who's performing at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai tomorrow, will be covered by 1,500 security personnel including 500 policemen.

    A source said the remaining 1,000 personnel would include private security guards from London and Dubai and those provided by actor Salman Khan's bodyguard, Shera.

    Security for Justin Bieber's visit has been enhanced, with all vehicles leaving and entering Mumbai being checked.

    Byculla Zoo

    Byculla Zoo hikes its entry fees

    The entry fee for Byculla Zoo was hiked from Rs. 5 to Rs. 100 on Monday.

    Last month, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were against the proposal; however, neither objected on Monday.

    Tickets for children aged 3-12 will be Rs. 25, and for adults, Rs. 100.

    Students of municipal schools and senior citizens may enter the zoo for free.

    Contaminated ice from Mumbai's street food can cause diarrhoea, UTI

    Civic officials and officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Maharashtra, in two separate operations seized over 23,000kg of contaminated ice from Mumbai and Thane.

    These ice samples were contaminated with the E.Coli bacteria, which causes diarrhoea, urinary tract infection (UTI), anaemia, etc.

    More than 916 cases of gastroenteritis (intestinal infection marked by diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever etc.) were reported in April.

    Railways

    76 new railway services to be initiated from Dadar, Bandra

    In a move that could reduce the footfall of passengers in Mumbai locals, the railways are planning to commence 76 new services from Dadar, Bandra and Kurla.

    These services are likely to begin after the monsoon.

    The Central Railways may start 40 new services and the Western Railways, 36.

    These services may be started only at Dadar or stations after.

    Maharashtra Finance Minister presents GST to Uddhav Thackerey

    On Monday morning, State Finance Minister Sudhir Mugantiwar met with Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackerey.

    They met at Matoshree, where Mugantiwar gave Thackerey a presentation on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to assure him that the Sena-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would be compensated by the State.

    Mugantiwar also said they would amend the existing State GST bill to include the compensation provision.
