World Heart Day: Laugh! It's good for your heart health

    What's the story

"Laughter is the best medicine," they say. Well, where's the lie?

September 29 is observed as World Heart Day, a global event that raises awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which is dubbed the world's leading killer.

This year's theme is "Use heart, know heart" which emphasizes how you can increase your heart health.

Here's where laughing out loud comes into the picture.

    #1

Laughing decreases cortisol, the stress hormone

When you're stressed, cortisol is released in your body which constricts your blood vessels and reduces your blood circulation.

Interestingly, similar reactions occur when anger takes hold.

Both conditions can elevate the risk of blood clots and high blood pressure, potentially leading to heart issues.

Laughter works as a natural antidote relaxing muscles and dispelling cortisol. So, laugh heartily for your heart's sake!

    #2

    Keeps your 'good'cholesterol high

A high LDL "bad" cholesterol is dangerous to heart health. However, a rise in the HDL "good" cholesterol is a plus sign.

The good cholesterol flows through the body to push the bad one back to the liver, keeping your heart safe and sound. It is then eliminated by the body.

Experts believe that laughing is highly recommended for those suffering from diabetes.

    #3

    Reduces inflammation in the arteries

When you burst into laughter, it triggers the inner lining of your blood vessels to release nitric oxide, a vital compound that works wonders.

Nitric oxide not only reduces inflammation but also acts as a natural guardian against artery-clogging plaque buildup, promoting the smooth and unhindered functioning of your heart.

Laughter can be likened to your heart engaging in an invigorating aerobic exercise!

    #4

Improves the functioning of your blood vessels

Blood vessels play an important role in keeping your heart alive and kicking.

Laughter causes the inner lining of these vessels called endothelium to rise and expand, causing an increase in blood flow.

Maintaining healthy endothelium can prevent your arteries from hardening, helping you avoid cardiovascular diseases big and small.

Also, by reducing inflammation, laughter helps maintain vascular health.
