Woman's weight gain from job stress highlights 'overwork obesity' crisis

    What's the story

A 24-year-old woman from Guangdong province, China, Ouyang Wenjing, has reported a significant weight gain due to job-related stress.

In just one year, Wenjing's weight increased from 60 kg to 80 kg.

She shared her personal experience on the social media platform Xiaohongshu and in an interview with Star Video, stating "My job became a disaster for my physical and mental health."

This case highlights the growing concern of "overwork obesity" in China's high-pressure work environment.

    Work culture

'Overwork obesity' emerges as a concerning trend

The term "overwork obesity" is gaining popularity online as more people like Wenjing share their experiences.

This condition, often associated with intense job pressure, long working hours, and irregular lifestyles, is becoming a worrying trend in China's popular cities.

Despite labor laws limiting work hours to 40 per week, numerous Chinese companies regularly ignore these rules.

The infamous "996" work culture remains widespread, offering few opportunities for a full two-day weekend.

    Health impact

Unhealthy lifestyle contributes to 'overwork obesity'

"Overwork obesity" refers to weight gain caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits and chronic stress related to excessive work demands.

This condition is especially common in high-pressure environments with long hours, irregular schedules, and limited self-care time.

Employees often rely on quick, unhealthy foods delivered to their desks and struggle to find time or energy for exercise.

Additionally, the stress of meeting harsh deadlines can cause overeating as a coping mechanism.

    Medical concerns

'Overwork obesity' poses serious health risks

Experts warn that the kind of lifestyle linked to overwork—such as erratic eating habits, dependence on fast food, and lack of exercise—can have severe health consequences.

Late dinners, overeating, and sleep deprivation often contribute to significant weight gain.

Overwork obesity also multiplies the risk of developing serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.

Additionally, it can contribute to mental health issues.

    Fatal overwork

Overworking leads to tragic consequences beyond obesity

In addition to weight gain, overworking can have further devastating effects.

A 30-year-old painter from Zhejiang, China, died of organ failure in June after enduring 104 consecutive workdays with just a single day of rest.

A court found that the man's death was directly linked to his extreme work schedule and ruled that his employer was 20% responsible for the tragedy.

This case underscores the severe consequences of excessive work demands beyond "overwork obesity."
