Blue Moon set to grace August night sky

    What's the story

This August, a unique celestial event known as the "Blue Moon" will captivate skywatchers.

Despite its name, the Blue Moon is not physically distinct from other Full Moons, but its rare occurrence has always intrigued observers.

The term "Blue Moon" is assigned to certain Full Moons and specifically refers to the Full Moon in August.

This phenomenon appears approximately every two and a half years due to an uneven cycle of Moon phases.

    About

    What is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon isn't about the Moon's color but its timing.

Cultures like Native Americans have named each Full Moon according to its month, such as January's "Wolf Moon."

Typically, it takes 29.5 days for the Moon to complete all its 12 phases.

However, because a calendar year is longer, about every two and a half years, there's an extra, 13th Full Moon.

This additional Full Moon, which doesn't align with the usual naming pattern, is called a "Blue Moon."

    Skywatching

Next Blue Moon to peak on August 19

The upcoming Blue Moon is set to peak on August 19 at 2:26 p.m. ET (18:26 GMT), according to Space.com.

The last time this event occurred was on August 31, 2023.

Skywatchers can witness this spectacle with their naked eyes, without the need for any special equipment.

This celestial event offers a unique opportunity for both amateur and seasoned skywatchers alike.

Capturing the Blue Moon: A guide for enthusiasts

For those interested in photographing this rare event, high-definition and advanced cameras are recommended for optimal results.

However, smartphones can also be used to capture the Blue Moon.

To ensure the best possible image, it's advised to have your device fully charged and find a location with a clear view of the sky.

Waiting for the Moon to reach its peak will provide optimal viewing and photographing opportunities.

    Occurrence

How often does a Blue Moon happen?

Blue Moons typically occur every two to three years.

In 2018, there were two Blue Moons in one year, just two months apart, with one coinciding with a lunar eclipse.

The next two Blue Moons will occur in a single year next in 2037, while the next monthly Blue Moon is on May 31, 2026.

The most recent Blue Moon, which occurred on August 31, 2023, was referred to as a "Super Blue Moon."
