As AQI worsens, here's how to improve indoor air quality

    What's the story

A thick veil of smog has currently blanketed the skyline of Delhi-NCR as the air quality index (AQI) breaches the '400' severity mark.

According to reports, the AQI is expected to deteriorate in the upcoming 15 to 20 days due to stubble burning and the lack of wind as winter sets in.

Meanwhile, here's how you can improve indoor air quality at home.

    Tip 1

Buy indoor plants to breathe better

While many consider indoor plants as great additions to home decor, they also come in handy as some natural air purifiers that can help you breathe better.

Scientifically, they remove harmful toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethane from the air and replace them with oxygen.

English ivy, ficus, bamboo palm, peace lily, spider plant, and snake plant are some good options.

    Tip 2

    Ensure proper ventilation

Proper ventilation inside your abode is a must as it keeps the air flowing and removes indoor air pollution.

Do this especially in close regions like the kitchen and washroom by switching on the exhaust fan. This will help circulate the air and improve its quality.

If you are planning to switch on the AC, ensure its filters and air ducts are clean.

    Tip 3

    Take steam

Certain natural and home remedies have been used for ages and have proven effective during pollution crises.

One of these remedies is steam inhalation. Inhaling steam can enhance lung health and cleanse the respiratory tract while also relaxing your air passages and removing harmful air particles.

You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the steam container for added benefits.

    Tip 4

Invest in a good air purifier system

Bringing an air purifier system at home is the best decision you can make during this time.

However, as you do that, always make sure that you purchase one with a high-efficiency particulate absorbing (HEPA) filter as it removes more than 99% of harmful air particles.

Such air purifiers can eliminate all sorts of pollution including smoke, pet danders, and excess carbon dioxide.
