    What's the story

The lesser-known side of Sri Lanka boasts many unique attractions and experiences that haven't been touched upon by many.

While the mainstream tourist spots are worth all the hype, these hidden gems in the country will contribute to a vacation you won't forget miles apart, decades down.

Add these five offbeat things to do in Sri Lanka to your itinerary.

    #1

Visit Saint Anthony's Church and Cemetery before it becomes sand

Saint Anthony's Church and Cemetery has only some ruins left which are being slowly eaten by sand with time.

While some believe that the church was built back in the 17th century during the Dutch rule, others have it that it was set up around the 1900s.

The dunes around it keep shifting sides, swallowing much of the church as they do it.

Snorkle and spot sharks at Shark Point Reef

Snorkeling at Shark Point Reef will be a wild experience for you as you can spot sharks in the water while you are at it.

Should you be scared? No! These shark species are, in fact, quite human-friendly and non-violent.

And even if you are an inexperienced snorkeler, you don't have to worry as it is the perfect place for you.

Go to Kandalama for hot air ballooning

Want to have a look at Sri Lanka from the skies? Go to Kandalama for hot air ballooning!

Situated approximately four hours from Colombo, mornings are the best time to board a balloon here as you can witness striking sunrise views here.

The ride estimably lasts for an hour but the briefing, take off, and landing, make it a four-hour affair.

Travel to Kalpitiya for kite surfing

If you are all set for an adventurous time in Sri Lanka, here is the perfect recommendation for you.

Go for kitesurfing at Kalpitya, where you can ride across the water as you power through the winds with a large kite attached to you.

This activity happens only from May to October and December to mid-March, so book accordingly.
