How to celebrate a sustainable Diwali this year

    What's the story

With only a few days remaining to celebrate Diwali, we are certain that you are caught up in the preparations already.

However, what you can do this year differently is to ensure you and your loved ones are celebrating the Festival of Lights in an eco-friendly and sustainable way.

Take note of these tips on how you can do that.

    Tip 1

Decor: Use earthen lamps and make rangoli with biodegradable colors

When it comes to home decor, most of us opt for items made with plastic and other harmful materials that do no good to the environment.

This year, decorate your abode with earthen lamps instead of candles as the latter releases toxins into the air.

If you are making a rangoli, use biodegradable or organic colors made of sawdust, rice powders, flowers, or spices.

    Tip 2

Gifting: Make sensible choices that last long

This year, chuck gifting items made of plastic and instead opt for something handmade, eco-friendly, and natural.

Seeds, saplings, plants, terracotta artifacts, flower-cycled incense sticks, plantable stationery, eco-friendly cutlery, and even healthy and organic munchies are some incredible gifting options that you can get your hands on.

Also, choose newspapers instead of wrapping papers since they are environment-friendly.

    Tip 3

Entertainment: Skip firecrackers and choose green crackers instead

Celebrate this Diwali with eco-friendly alternatives to firecrackers that cause no air pollution and noise.

This involves purchasing only green crackers that feature no ash and include dust suppressants that reduce emissions of pollutants into the air.

They produce water vapor instead of pollutants and are 30% less noisy than toxic firecrackers.

Here's everything more you should know about green crackers.

    Tip 4

Consumption: Save electricity and eat homecooked food

Lights occupy a whole lot of Diwali home decor and most of them consume a lot of electricity.

Instead of buying those fancy-schmancy lights, go for earthen lamps or LED lights that serve the purpose beautifully and help you save on energy too.

Cooking food at home instead of ordering from outside can reduce the involvement of plastic containers and artificial flavors.
