How to encourage your aging parents to exercise

    What's the story

As our parents grow older, it is really important to help them stay active and healthy.

Regular exercise can make a big difference in their well-being, giving them more energy and helping them live longer.

But sometimes it can be tough to motivate older adults to exercise.

By creating a positive atmosphere and explaining why exercise is important, we can help them do so.

    Education

    Keep them educated

Encouraging someone to exercise is not easy, especially when it comes to aging parents.

Take the time to sit with them and explain the many ways exercise can benefit their fitness and health.

Keep sharing information with them, even if they already know some of it.

Just be careful not to annoy them by repeating the same things over and over again.

    Activities

    Guide them toward their interests

You don't have to believe in the misconception that intense gym workouts or heavy weights are the only ways to get in shape.

Does your dad love gardening? Does your mom have a passion for dancing? Well, then that's good news.

Light-weight physical activities like gardening, walking, or swimming, all count as exercise.

Guide your parents towards these activities and watch them start moving.

    Opportunities

    Find opportunities to be active

Regular exercise might not be enough to undo the negative effects of sitting for long hours.

Show your parents how to add more movement throughout the day.

For instance, stretching or doing light exercises while watching TV, brisk walks during breaks, or opting for stairs instead of elevators.

Every little bit counts, so help them discover ways to stay active throughout their daily routines.

    Social

    Add the social element

Exercising can become more fun and motivating when they involve their friends.

Encourage them to find a friend or a small group of friends who can exercise together.

Having someone dependable to join them for walks or attend group yoga or dance classes can make a huge difference.

The added accountability and encouragement from their exercise buddies can help them stay on track.

    Inspire them

    Practice what you preach

Get your parents to join you in your workouts. When they see you being active, it can inspire them to do the same.

Plus, it's a great opportunity for you to spend quality time together while taking care of your health.

You can engage in various activities like brisk walks, yoga, or pranayama. Basically, focus on exercises that are light and easy to perform.
