Signs your aging dog needs extra care

    What's the story

Our beloved canine companions have a unique knack for embedding themselves deeply within our hearts. Just as we do, our pets age, and with time, they undergo subtle transformations.

Their youth exuberance will eventually be replaced with wisdom and depth of character.

Understanding these shifts in behavior, appearance, and health can help you provide the care and attention they need.

    Sign 1

    Going deaf

One of the major symptoms that your dog is aging is a loss of hearing to some level.

However, it can be challenging to determine whether they are truly deaf or simply have developed selective hearing as they age.

You should reconsider allowing your dog to run free, or decide to teach them basic orders via sign language.

    Sign 2

    Increased or strained urination

Urination that is more frequent or strained may be a sign of kidney illness or a urinary tract infection, both of which tend to occur in middle-aged to older dogs.

Medicine or a change in dog food can help sort urine incontinence and any difficulty. However, if you think something is wrong with your doggo, consult the vet.

    Sign 3

    Change in dietary habits

If your dog is becoming older, you might notice that their feeding habits have altered and they are taking longer to eat. So, please go to your vet and get your dog on a specific diet.

As your dog contends with a slowing metabolism and reduced energy levels, providing them with a nutritious diet, including senior dog food, can have a significant impact.

    Sign 4

Cloudy eyes and loss of sight

One of the most noticeable indicators that your dog is aging is nuclear sclerosis, which can cause the eyes of your dog to become cloudy.

You might also notice that your pooch seems to be losing their vision. However, this can happen very gradually and the majority of dogs with nuclear sclerosis continue to have good vision for a very long time.

    Sign 5

    Longer sleeping hours

As dogs age, they tend to sleep more deeply and for longer periods.

In light of this, make sure their sleeping arrangements are always nice and comfortable. Ensure that the space where your dog sleeps is warm in your house.

To keep them warm and shield them during the winter, and give them a fleecy blanket or a raised bed to sleep in.
