    What's the story

The auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri which celebrates Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati's marriage is around the corner.

On this day, devotees observe a fast and offer prayers at temples.

While married women pray for the well-being of their husbands, those awaiting marriage pray for a husband like Lord Shiva.

If you are planning to observe a fast on Maha Shivratri, try these foods.

    Soft and spongy

    Vrat dhokla

Lightly roast samwat ke chawal in a pan. Mix together rice, chili paste, rock salt, ginger paste, and yogurt to prepare the batter.

Let the batter ferment overnight. Transfer it to a ghee-greased tin and steam the mixture for 20 minutes.

    Allow it to cool.

Saute cumin, curry leaves, and red pepper in ghee. Pour it over the dhokla, garnish with coriander, and serve.

    Crispy and light

    Sabudana vada

These crispy, light and healthy sabudana vadas are perfect to have during your Maha Shivratri fast.

Mix together roasted sabudana, ground peanuts, red chili powder, green chilies, salt, coriander leaves, lemon juice, and boiled potatoes.

Mash the ingredients to prepare a thick batter.

Make small, round balls and deep-fry the vadas in hot oil until golden brown.

    Serve hot with curd.

    Creamy and spicy

    Dahi aloo

This creamy and spicy dahi aloo can be savored with kuttu ki puri.

Saute cumin seeds and crushed black pepper in a ghee-greased pan.

Add boiled potato and rock salt and fry.

Saute cumin seeds, crushed peppercorns, green chilies, and ginger in another ghee-greased pan.

Add buckwheat flour, dahi(yogurt), and water and whisk well. Add fried potatoes, and green chilies, mix well and enjoy.

    Rich aroma

    Singhada halwa

Packed with nutrients, this singhada halwa has a rich aroma and luscious texture.

Cook water chestnut flour or singhada flour in a ghee-greased pan for four minutes while stirring occasionally.

Add warm water, mix well, and cook for another four minutes.

Add sugar and cook again. Add cardamom powder and mix everything well.

Garnish with almonds and pistachios and serve warm.

    Vrat-friendly cheela

    Kuttu cheela

Mix together kuttu ka atta, cumin seeds, green chili, and sendha namak to prepare a thin batter.

Grease a non-stick pan with desi ghee. Pour the batter, make a thin round pancake, and cook well.

Top up the pancake with grated paneer and shredded ginger.

Simmer tamarind, water, chili powder, sugar, ginger powder, black pepper, and salt. Serve the cheela with this tamarind chutney.
