    What's the story

Ecotourism is essentially about taking responsibility for our natural environment.

In recent times, ecotourism has gained widespread popularity as people seek opportunities to connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Interestingly, numerous destinations across India are actively involved in conserving and promoting biodiversity. Let's explore a few of these places.

    Place 1

    Mawlynnong Village, Meghalaya

Mawlynnong is one of the cleanest villages in India. It is located in the East Khasi Hills at a distance of 90 km from the state capital Shillong.

Here, the entire village actively participates in keeping the place clean. Plastic is banned here and the locals have kept bamboo dustbins to collect litter.

Tourists who disobey the rules are heavily charged.

    Place 2

    Thenmala, Kerala

Located about 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Thenmala aka Honey Hill is known for producing high-quality honey.

It is a major tourist spot in the state as it offers tourists its beautiful landscapes where you can do nature-friendly activities such as boating, trekking, and rock climbing.

Tourists can also spend a night in the forest inside huts.

    Place 3

    Khonoma Village, Nagaland

Hunting used to be a major source of livelihood for the inhabitants here.

After the hunting ban in the area in the 1990s, the village gradually started to develop into a green village where the localities preserve trees and keep the land clean.

The village is home to Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary to protect the Blyth's Tragopan, a native endangered bird species.

    Place 4

    Matheran, Maharashtra

Matheran is a small hill station located in the Sahyadri Hills of the Western Ghats. The place was announced as an eco-sensitive area by the Ministry of Environment.

Matheran's forest-covered hills keep pollution at bay, resulting in a peaceful and clean summer hideaway.

Tourists come here for its breathtaking views, trekking, bird watching, and other environment-friendly activities.

    Place 5

    Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh

Lahaul and Spiti are largely known for their extreme climate and rough terrain.

However, that does not stop people from coming to witness the picturesque views and experience the spiritual aura that the place has to offer.

The locals along with a few organizations in the area are trying to save the ecosystem by promoting sustainable travel.
