The highly anticipated 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela kicked off today, February 2, near Faridabad, showcasing the best of Indian handloom and handicraft traditions.
Inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu, this annual extravaganza, organized by Haryana Tourism, celebrates the diverse art, culture, and heritage of India and beyond.
Running until February 18, the event will feature participants from over 20 countries spanning South Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Significance
What is the Mela about
Surajkund, meaning "Lake of the Sun," holds great historical significance. It derives its name from the Surajkund Lake, an ancient reservoir constructed in the tenth century by King Suraj Pal of the Tomar dynasty.
In an effort to increase tourism in the state, the Haryana government organizes the Surajkund International Craft Mela, which is held in February each year.
The occasion attracts both domestic and foreign attendees.

Gujarat: Theme state for Surajkund Mela 2024
This year's Mela focusses on the colorful culture of Gujarat, selected as the theme state for the 37th edition.
The fairgrounds will be adorned with decorations and stalls showcasing Gujarat's rich heritage. Gujarat previously held this honor in 1997.
Last year, Surajkund Mela featured eight states from the Northeast: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura - as theme states.

Timings and ticket prices for Surajkund Mela 2024
Open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, the Surajkund Mela offers different ticket prices depending on the day - Rs. 120 on weekdays and Rs. 180 on weekends.
Students can enjoy a 50% discount on entry tickets during weekdays with a valid ID card.
Similarly, senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and soldiers are also eligible for a 50% discount.

Reaching Surajkund Mela 2024 is easy with multiple transportation options available.
Buses depart from Delhi's ISBTs and Shivaji Stadium, as well as nearby cities like Gurugram and Faridabad, heading to Surajkund Bus Stand. Alternatively, visitors can choose taxis directly from Delhi.
The nearest railway station is New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), while Badarpur Station on the violet line is the closest metro station.
The event is also easily accessible via National Highways through Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad.
