    Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud remarked that truth has become a "victim" in the age of social media amid the spread of fake news.

    Chandrachud made the remarks while he was speaking at the 2023 American Bar Association (ABA) India Conference on Friday on "Law in the Age of Glocalisation: Convergence of India and the West."

    Surge in anti-globalization sentiment: Chandrachud

    Pointing out how happenings across the oceans nowadays influence people's day-to-day lifestyle, the CJI said: "Globalization has led to its own discontent."

    "There are a number of reasons for the meltdown being experienced the world over...there has been a surge in anti-globalization sentiment. The origins of this lay in, for example, the 2001 terror attacks," added Chandrachud.

    "We live in an age where people are short on their patience, they are short on their tolerance," Chandrachud was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

    "In the age of social media, they start trolling you, if they don't like your point of view. Truth has become a victim in the spread of false news," he added.

    Furthermore, CJI Chandrachud also pointed out how the Constitution of India's chief architect, BR Ambedkar, defined the significance of global engagement in drafting the constitution of the country.

    "Dr. Ambedkar added that it was not only inspiration from the global but was based on local needs, and a uniquely Indian global product was produced," the CJI said at the event.

    Video conferencing has led to decentralization of justice: Chandrachud

    Speaking about the COVID-19 pandemic, he said it was another global meltdown, but remarked that it came as an opportunity in darkness.

    "The Supreme Court is not just the Supreme Court in Tilak Marg but the Supreme Court of the smallest of villages. Video conferencing has led to the decentralization of justice, and it is an important paradigm of access to justice," he added.

    CJI, SC Bar association president engaged in heated exchange

    The CJI was recently in the news following a heated exchange between him and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President and senior advocate Vikas Singh on Thursday over the hearing of an appeal seeking land for lawyers' chambers.

    Chandrachud reportedly told Singh that he would not be browbeaten and would not allow it to happen during his final two years in office.

    "Mr. Singh, I am the Chief Justice of India. I have never let myself be browbeaten by Bar members, and I will not let it happen in the final two years of my tenure," Chandrachud was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

    As per reports, the heated face-off began when Singh urged the top court during mentioning hours to take up the appeal for hearing urgently.

    For a long time, the SCBA has demanded that land measuring 1.33 acres allocated to the country's apex court behind the petrol pump on the Ring Road be transformed into chamber blocks for the lawyers.
