    What's the story

The Indian Army registered a big win on Wednesday after Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Naveed Jatt was killed in an encounter in Kuthpora area of Budgam, Kashmir.

Two other terrorists were also neutralized in the operation, which began after forces learned of their locations.

Jatt was wanted for the murder of Rising Kashmir editor-in-chief Shujaat Bukhari, who died in June this year.

    The terrorist

Jatt had escaped custody in February, boosted LeT's morale

In February, Jatt had managed to escape police custody while he was being taken to Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital for a medical examination.

During the shootout, two policemen were martyred.

His escape played a role in boosting the confidence of the terrorist organization, whose senior members Abu Islamil and Abu Dujana were killed in counter-insurgency.

Jatt, a Pakistani national, was last seen in August at another terrorist's funeral.

    Previous successes

Recently, Army has manged to eliminate dangerous terrorists

As a precautionary measure, authorities have snapped internet services in Budgam. Soon after the encounter, clashes broke between protesters and armed forces.

Earlier, on Sunday seven terrorists, including three alleged top commanders and two Pakistani terrorists were killed. In yet another operation on Friday, security forces gunned down six terrorists.

About the successful operations, police had said all 'notorious terrorists have been successfully eliminated'.

    The murder

Backstory: Bukhari was gunned down days before Eid

To recall, on June 14 this year, Bukhari, a celebrated journalist was murdered as he left his Press Colony office before Iftar.

His car was intercepted by three gunmen. Bukhari and two security guards who accompanied him were murdered in cold blood.

At that time, the government had declared a 'ceasefire' for the month of Ramzan.

His murder received condemnation from all quarters.
