#HealthBytes: Five risky sexual practices, and how to prevent them

    What's the story

A satisfying and safe sex life is crucial for a couple's overall mental, physical and emotional well-being.

However, people sometimes indulge in risky sexual practices, due to factors such as lack of sexual awareness, intoxication, among others.

But such practices can risk you for unwanted/early pregnancies and STIs.

Here are five common, risky sexual practices and how you can stay safe from them.

    #1

    Having unprotected sex

Indulging in sexual activity without using protection (read condom) makes it easier for bodily fluids like blood and semen to pass from one partner to another, thus risking them for unwanted pregnancy and dreadful STIs (Sexually transmitted infections).

Although not a 100% sure shot method to prevent pregnancies/STIs, always use a condom during sexual activity, to stay on the safe end.

    #2

    Having multiple partners

If you are sexually active with more than one partner, naturally you are at a higher risk of getting an STI.

Know that being faithful is your best bet. However, if you can't do that, always inquire all your partners' sexual health histories before getting busy with them.

Also, get regularly tested for STDs like HIV.

    #3

    Unhygienic sex

Unhygienic sexual practices can also invite risk of certain infections.

To reduce your risk, it is advisable to always have sex in clean and tidy surroundings, and make sure the toys, if any, are clean.

Plus, women are advised to take a trip to the washroom after sex, to avoid risk of UTI.

Additionally, a couple must use fresh underclothing, and keep wipes handy.

    #4

    Anal and oral sex

Anal and oral sex are also equally (if not more) risky as is vaginal sex.

To reduce risk, always use a condom and lots of lubrication, while having anal sex.

Further, while practising oral sex on penis, always use a non-lubricated latex or polyurethane-based condom, and during oral sex involving the vagina or the anus, use a dental dam.

    #5

    Drugs and alcohol

If you have sex with someone who injects drugs, your risk of getting an STI increases, because drug equipment like needles carry blood, that might be infected.

So, avoid having sex with a partner who takes drugs, and if you must, then ensure using a condom and get tested for STI afterwards.

Also, avoid drinking too much, as it affects your decision-making abilities.
