    Punjab SP Salwinder Singh forced to retire over sexual-harassment cases

    Former Punjab SP Salwinder Singh who shot to infamy over his role in the Pathankot airbase attack has been forced to retire after several cases of sexual harassment against him, questioned his conduct.

    The Punjab DGP office submitted the report for his compulsory retirement to the state Home Department.

    He will continue to get retirement benefits after his retirement.

    Who is Salwinder Singh?

    Salwinder Singh was an SP rank police officer in the Punjab Police Service since 2006.

    He shot to the limelight in the aftermath of the Pathankot attack, when he was posted as the SP of Gurdaspur.

    Singh alleged that he was kidnapped by the terrorists, who later released him and fled with his car.

    The NIA gave him a clean chit after investigations.

    Authorities said Singh had displayed "controversial conduct throughout his service in Punjab Police...Due to a series of cases against him, the senior officials decided to take action against him in form of giving him compulsory retirement."

    What are the cases against him?

    According to reports, 6 female police officers filed sexual harassment complaints against him with the DGP's office in October 2016.

    In August'16 he was booked in another sexual harassment complaint by a Punjab government employee. He was suspended in September 2016.

    He was also accused of sexual harassment earlier, when he was in training as an ASI in Phillaur Police Academy.
