    What's the story

Aadhaar card is one the most important documents that each and every Indian citizen should have.

Besides serving as the unique proof of your identity and address, an Aadhaar card allows you to file your income tax return, apply for a PAN card, avail monetary benefits of all government schemes, among others.

Read on to know how you can apply for your Aadhaar card.

    Definition

First off, what is an Aadhaar card?

An Aadhaar card is an identity card which carries your 12-digit Unique Identity Number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on the basis of your biometric and demographic data.

    Step #1

Step 1: Locate your nearest Aadhaar center, book appointment online

The first step is to locate your nearest Aadhaar enrolment center by visiting the UIDAI website.

After you have located the center near you, proceed by booking an online appointment with the center.

An online appointment helps you save a lot of time which you might have wasted in standing in the queue at the enrolment center.

    Step #2

Step 2: Keep these documents handy before visiting Aadhaar center

Once you have booked an appointment, make sure you have the following documents ready with you before the appointment date.

A valid ID proof (Passport, Voter ID card, Driving License, etc).

A valid residential address proof (Passport, Voter ID card, Water Bill, Electricity Bill, Landline Bill, etc).

Proof of Date of Birth (Passport, Birth Certificate, University marksheet).

    Step #3

Step 3: Submit Aadhaar enrolment form and biometric data

The next step is to visit enrolment center and fill and submit the Aadhaar enrolment form with supporting documents.

You may also download the Aadhaar enrolment form online.

After submission of the documents, an official present at the center will take a photograph of you and your biometric data- an impression of fingerprints of both of your hands and a scan of your iris.

    Step #4

Step 4: Get your Aadhaar acknowledgement slip

After submitting the information, collect your Aadhaar enrolment acknowledgment slip carrying a 14-digit enrolment number.

You may check your Aadhaar application status on the UIDAI website using this 14-digit number.

Your Aadhaar card will get delivered to you in less than 3 months via Indian Post.

However, in the meantime, you may download a copy of the Aadhaar card known as e-Aadhaar from here - https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/#/
