What PM Modi, Biden discussed ahead of G20 Summit

    What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States (US) President Joe Biden held bilateral talks in New Delhi on Friday, reiterating their commitment to enhancing the India-US strategic partnership amid the rising influence of China.

The leaders outlined a comprehensive vision for cooperation in various fields, including technology, defense, healthcare, and renewable energy.

This comes ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit and months after PM Modi's state visit to the US in June 2023.

    Context

    Why does this story matter?

The US is focused on building stronger links with India to counter China and its economic maneuverings in the Indo-Pacific.

PM Modi and Biden were also looking to discuss the polarization within the G20, as the US-led G7 is in conflict with the Russia-China bloc over the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

This is significant as the mutual understanding at the G20 Summit could lead to a joint declaration, although the US expressed doubts that Russia and China would agree to it.

    Details

Technology takes center stage in Modi-Biden talks

A joint statement issued after the talks emphasized the role of technology in strengthening the partnership.

The leaders praised the India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) and planned a midterm review for September.

They also agreed to expand cooperation in domains like artificial intelligence (AI) and space technology. Notably, the US Congress recently approved GE Aerospace (aerospace company and subsidiary of General Electric)'s agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to jointly produce engines for military aircraft in India.

PM Modi and President Biden also pledged to "deepen and diversify" their major defense partnership.

They said discussions were on for joint work in space exploration and planetary defense following the success of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission.

The leaders also expressed support for building resilient global semiconductor supply chains, welcoming investments from Microchip Technology Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices in India.

The two countries have reportedly already signed an agreement to secure telecommunications and digital inclusions.

    Support

President Biden reiterates US support for India in UNSC

As India prepares to host the next Quad Leaders' Summit in 2024, PM Modi and Biden reaffirmed the Quad's importance in fostering a "free and resilient Indo-Pacific."

President Biden reaffirmed the US's support for India as a permanent member of a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and welcomed India's candidacy for the non-permanent seat in 2028-29.

On the other hand, PM Modi applauded the US decision to co-chair the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative on Trade Connectivity and Maritime Transport.

    Partnership

Agree to boost electric mobility, green tech

Furthermore, the joint statement said that efforts were underway to expand electric mobility in India with US support, including the procurement of 10,000 made-in-India electric buses.

Both nations are also advancing investment platforms for greenfield renewable energy, battery storage, and budding green technologies.

They have committed to contributing up to $500 million each to help establish a renewable infrastructure investment fund.

The leaders also commended the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) for its innovative collaborations in the defense sector.
