    What's the story

In a shocking news, a whopping one-third of engineering and technical institutes have been found to submit false data to the All India Council for Technical Education for getting approval.

In a surprise inspection of 311 institutes that were sanctioned last year, major discrepancies were found in the information submitted by 89 of them, and what actually exists on ground.

    Data

Institutes fudged information on staff, infrastructure

Most institutes had inflated figures regarding strength of staff as well as students, area of premises, and more.

In several cases, laboratories and other facilities existed only on paper.

AICTE sources said major fines will be imposed on such institutes. Some may even face closure.

"In future too, AICTE will go harsh on those found submitting fraudulent data," a senior official said.

    The plague of 'fake' institutes

AICTE recently released a list of 279 'fake' technical institutes - institutes which hadn't been approved and thus weren't authorized to hand out degrees. Delhi emerged as the fake institute capital, with 66 such colleges - the highest of all states.
