    Lightning kills 18 in Bihar, UP and Odisha

    What's the story

    Even as torrential rains continue to pound the Konkan belt, a variety of weather conditions was witnessed in different states yesterday.

    In Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, lightning struck leaving 18 killed and 13 injured, while heavy rains lashed many places in Himachal Pradesh.

    Meanwhile, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi reeled under sweltering heat, although thunderstorms have been predicted for today.

    Relief

    Bihar government announces Rs. 4L ex-gratia for deceased kin

    Bihar reported maximum casualty at 11, while 5 and 2 people were killed in UP and Odisha, respectively.

    Bihar Disaster Management Authority said six died in Saharsa, while four were killed in Darbhanga and one in Madhepura.

    Ex-gratia of Rs. 4L will be paid to kin of deceased, said government officials.

    13 people were also injured in Bihar, who were admitted to local hospitals.

    Predictions

    Himachal may get thunderstorms and gusty winds today and tomorrow

    Heavy rainfall were reported from many places in Himachal Pradesh yesterday, with Kufri, a hill station 20kms away from Shimla, remaining the wettest.

    Chhaila (Shimla district) and Kandaghat (Solan district), also got rains yesterday.

    Thunderstorms and gusty winds have been predicted for Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi and Kullu over the weekend.

    Further, light rains brought relief in Rajasthan, which was reeling under extreme heat.

    Delhi, Haryana, Punjab continue to sizzle; relief predicted for Delhi

    Meanwhile, Delhi and its neighbors, Haryana and Punjab, weren't so fortunate.

    The national capital recorded a normal 40.5 degrees, but Hisar in Haryana sizzled at 45 degrees, three levels above normal, while Amritsar remained the hottest in Punjab at 41.3 degrees, also above normal.

    Delhi might get some relief today, as light rains and thunderstorms have been predicted by MeT department.

    Heavy rains

    Down South, Coastal Karnataka, Goa and South-Maharashtra put on alert

    Coastal Karnataka, Goa and South-Maharashtra have been put on alert, following predictions of heavy rainfall till June 10.

    "It's very likely it'll extend to north coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, from tomorrow," said a MeT department official.

    The intensity of the rainfall may subside from June 12, added the official.

    In next 24-hours, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and remaining parts of coastal Andhra may also receive rains.
