    What's the story

Mahatma Gandhi's grandson- Kanu Ramdas Gandhi passed away at the age of 87.

A NASA scientist, he had been in a coma since October after suffering a heart attack and brain haemorrhage.

Famously, Kanu was the boy seen walking ahead of Mahatma Gandhi during the Dandi march, holding one end of his grandfather's stick at the time of the salt Satyagraha.

    Historical

Gandhi's kin: Kanu one of the 15 grandchildren

Mahatma Gandhi was succeeded by 15 grandchildren. Kanu Gandhi was Nirmal Gandhi and Ramdas Gandhi's son (Gandhiji's 3rd son).

    Favorite grandchild

    Kanu's bond with Gandhiji

Born in 1928, Kanu was Gandhiji's favorite grandson.

It is told that he was the only grandchild with whom Gandhiji shared food with from his plate.

Kanu always shared the rear seat with Bapu during his travels.

Bapu paid special attention to Kanubhai and had personally supervised his formal education (since he was three years old.)

Gandhi was assassinated when Kanu was 17.

    Do you know?

Nehru and Patel sent Kanu to MIT

Not many know this, but after Gandhi's assassination it was Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who had met with the US Ambassador John Kenneth Galbraith and ensured that Kanubhai went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study applied mathematics.

    Kanu Gandhi's life

A life of accomplishment and strife

Kanu was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was handpicked to work with the "US Defense Department on the wing structure of fighter aircraft".

    In 1991, he joined NASA.

After moving to India, Kanu and his wife Shivalakshmi moved from one ashram to another.

They even spent 6 months at New Delhi's Guru Vishram Vruddha Ashram.
