    What's the story

In a major boost to security forces, top Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Noor Mohammad Tantray alias Noor Trali was gunned down in an overnight encounter in J&K's Pulwama yesterday.

Trali was leading Jaish's command in South Kashmir. He had jumped parole some months ago and was involved in an attack on a BSF camp near Srinagar airport in October.

    Here's more.

    Details

Intel said some terrorists were planning an attack

Teams of army, police and CRPF launched an anti-terror operation in Samboora village of Awantipora area based on intel about two-three terrorists planning an attack.

The village was cordoned off. During the search operations, the hiding terrorists opened fire on the personnel.

Trali was killed in retaliatory firing. Arms and ammunition were recovered.

The encounter is underway and search for others continues.

    Profile

The three-feet-tall terrorist who had become a "headache"

The three-feet-tall Trali was arrested in 2003 and awarded life in 2011. He was released on parole in 2015, which has been extended several times.

He was involved in an attack on the District Police Lines in Pulwama.

He was also reportedly involved in a grenade attack on PWD Minister Naeem Akhtar's cavalcade in Tral.

His death is expected to hit the JeM hard.

    Data

Over 200 terrorists killed in 2017, highest in seven years

DNA reports that over 206 terrorists have been killed this year, the highest number since 2010. Despite last year's unrest, forces had killed 165 terrorists in 2016. This year also marks the highest number of local youths joining terrorism (around 100) in seven years.
