    What's the story

Jain monk Tarun Sagar passed away on Saturday at Radhapuri Jain temple, Krishna Nagar, Delhi at about 3 AM. He was 51.

He is said to have been suffering from jaundice for the past few days.

His last rites will be performed today at Tarunsagaram, Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

PM Modi expressed his condolences and tweeted he would always be remembered for his rich ideals.

    Do you know?

Tarun Sagar refused treatment a few days ago

After being diagnosed with jaundice, Tarun Sagar was admitted to a private hospital. However, he had refused any treatment a few days ago. He opted for 'Santhara' - the Jain ritual of fast unto death at Radhapuri temple.

    Life

    In 1981, he accepted celibacy

Born on June 26, 1967, in Madhya Pradesh, Tarun Sagar adopted celibacy in 1981, and decided to lead a life as Digambar Jain monk.

He was invited by the Haryana government for an address in 2016, and it gained headlines.

Notably, his lecture series titled 'Kadve Pravachan', where he criticized common practices and views were popular among his followers.

    Quote

These days people lack smile and happiness: Tarun Sagar

"I don't talk about any religion, any community, I talk about life and everyone loves to live. That is the reason people love me. These days, people have a scarcity of two elements: a smile on face and happiness in life," he had once said.

    Condolences

Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh express grief

Apart from PM Modi, BJP President Amit Shah also expressed grief. He wrote on Twitter: Saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Muni Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj. He had devoted his entire life for the welfare of the society.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, he was shocked with the news and added his death has created a void in Indian sainthood society.
