    Rakesh Pal, the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, passed away in Chennai on Sunday due to a heart attack.

    TOI, citing sources, reported that Pal developed chest pain while he was at INS Adyar, discussing preparations for Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's upcoming visit.

    He was immediately rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) around 2:30pm but passed away at 7:00pm.

    Career overview

    Pal's distinguished career in the Indian Coast Guard

    Pal was appointed as the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard in July last year.

    He began his service with the Indian Coast Guard in January 1989, after graduating from the Indian Naval Academy.

    Throughout his career spanning over three decades, Pal held several key positions including Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) and Additional Director General at Coast Guard Headquarters.

    Pal's extensive sea experience and commendations

    Pal had extensive sea experience, having commanded various classes of ICG ships.

    He also led two Coast Guard bases in Gujarat - Okha and Vadinar.

    During his tenure as Director General, he oversaw significant operations including drug seizures, rescue missions during severe cyclonic storms, joint exercises with foreign coast guards, anti-poaching operations, and coastal security exercises.

    For his exceptional service, Pal was awarded the Tatrakshak Medal in 2013 and the President's Tatrakshak Medal in 2018.
