IMD predicts heatwave in Delhi, heavy rainfall in Northeast

    What's the story

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put several states in India on a heatwave alert. The eastern and western parts are likely to witness severe heatwave conditions with temperatures soaring as high as 42.5 degrees Celsius.

The Northeast, meanwhile, is preparing for heavy rainfall due to cyclonic circulation.

Authorities have urged citizens to take necessary precautions against the heatwaves, but remain alert about sudden weather changes.

    Weather forecast

Delhi to see significant temperature rise

Even though recent rains and strong winds gave a brief respite in parts of North India, the IMD warns temperatures are going to rise sharply in the next few days.

Delhi, which is currently enjoying pleasant weather, is going to see a sharp increase in temperature. Forecasts say it might reach 40 degrees Celsius by the end of March.

    Early heatwave

    Odisha records extreme temperatures

The intense heatwave has hit much earlier this time, affecting eastern and western parts of the country.

Many regions have already experienced maximum temperatures, with Odisha's Boudh district topping the list at 42.5 degrees Celsius on March 16.

Jharsuguda in Odisha also sizzled at a searing 41.8 degrees Celsius on March 14.

    Northeast rain

Cyclonic circulation to bring heavy rainfall

While parts of India continue to remain under the spell of severe heat, a cyclonic circulation over Assam is expected to cause heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and widespread showers in the Northeast.

Several states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, are likely to witness heavy downpours.

In fact, according to IMD's prediction, these states will witness five days of intense rains along with strong winds.

    Weather patterns

Unstable weather conditions expected in other parts

Other parts of the country are expected to see unstable weather. Several states, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, UP, and Bihar, are likely to see cloudy skies and strong winds. Some areas might even see rain over the next few days.

Karnataka, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and coastal Gujarat might also witness sporadic rainfall.
